We’ve all spent hours shoveling snow out of our driveways and patios, meaning we all know how absolutely miserable it is. It’s cold, it’s hard, it’s painful, and it takes forever. An electric snow shovel takes care of all those problems, making shoveling your snow a quick and easy affair, even quicker than snow blowers can.

It works by providing power, either by cable or battery pack, to a turning auger that then pushes the snow out of your path. You don’t have to do any shoveling snow yourself. Think of it as an early Christmas present.

To save you that pain, we’ve put together some reviews of the best electric snow shovels currently on the market.

No matter what your uses for the shovel are or what your price range is like, one of these shovels should be just what you’re looking for.

Specs and Details

The Snow Joe has a particularly strong motor, even when compared to the other impressive motors of its competitors. It runs off of 400W that comes straight from the battery, so there are no cables for you to trip and stumble over. Being cordless is always a must-have for us in an electric snow shovel. There’s nothing worse than trying to drag a wire through the snow you’re trying to get rid of in the first place.

The motor is capable of lifting around 1,620 pounds of snow with each battery charge, which should be more than enough for all of your morning snow-clearing needs.

The product dimensions of the entire unit are 55.1 x 13 x 8.7 inches, and it weighs a total of 15 pounds. In other words, it’s super light and compact. It runs off of one lithium iON battery that is included in the purchase.

Features

The auger itself follows suit when it comes to impressing. It runs off of a two-blade high impact design with a low-temperature paddle that can throw snow upwards of 20 feet. Mor importantly than that, though, it cuts 13 x 6 inches of snow out of the path when in use. This 13 inches wide clearing width x 6 inches deep figure should be enough to clear your walkway in one use, but you’re going to have to do some laps to get the driveway usable.

The system as a whole is compatible with iON+ 24-volt batteries. The 24-volt iON that the snow power shovel comes with is a rechargeable lithium iON battery, which is a nice touch. However, it only gives you 22 minutes of run time.

As an additional bonus, the shovel also comes with a comprehensive 2-year warranty. The power shovel is seasonal, so there’s no reason that it should break within that 2-year warranty, but the option to replace it is there if that does come to pass.

Usage

Learning to use an electric snow shovel is incredibly simple. It’s a cordless iON battery-powered shovel, meaning not only is there no wires to trip up over, but there’s no gas, extension cord, or oil in the equation.

Once you plug your electric battery in, using the shovel is incredibly easy. You push down a button to start the motor, give the shovel a tip forward into the snow, and walk straight. The auger is going to start throwing snow upwards of 20 feet away.

This kind of power is best if you have a patio that’s surrounded by any kind of fencing. The Snow Joe should be able to actually clear the fence, making the whole snow removal process as pain-free as possible. It’s got great inch clearing capabilities for a moderate price tag. Being able to shovel 6 inches deep of snow is realistically more than you’re ever going to need.

That being said, this isn’t one of the best electric snow shovels when it comes to pounds of snow per minute. Heavy-duty jobs with this electric shovel can take a while, even with its great inch clearing width.

FAQs

Some people out there have a couple of specific questions when it comes to the Snow Joe cordless snow shovel, so we’re going to answer a few here.

Does the Snow Joe Fold for Easy Storage

Unfortunately, no. Despite being lightweight and compact, the Snow Joe does not fold for easy storage. Don’t let that put you off, though. You can easily fit this snow shovel in the corner of a shed or under the stairs.

Does it Have Wheels?

No. Wheels have a tendency to get stuck in the snow. Instead, Snow Joe has a rounded bottom that can glide over the snow. This is the best we’ve seen this feature implemented.

Does the Shovel Damage the Ground?

No, the Snow Joe shovels snow while leaving about a quarter of an inch on the ground.

Earthwise SN70016 Cordless Electric Snow Shovel

The Earthwise snow shovel* is a bit of an upgrade from the Snow Joe, although the improved performance does come with a heftier price tag. This electric snow shovel is going to run you around $200, but is it worth it?

Earthwise SN70016 Electric Corded 12Amp Snow Shovel, 16" Width, 430lbs/Minute

Last update was on: November 23, 2020 6:47 pm

Specs and Details

Statistically, everything about the Earthwise motor is significantly more powerful than the Snow Joe. It handles more snow, throws it further, and can move a higher level of weight. It operates off of a 40-volt brushless motor that takes a 4Ah battery that is thankfully included in the box. Again, being battery powered is absolutely vital.

How long you actually get out of your battery depends on how intense the snow is. However, you can expect roughly 25-40 minutes of run time from a full, triple discharged lithium battery. Thankfully, you get a smart charger with the powered snow shovel, which makes keeping it powered a breeze instead of a chore.

In terms of size, the Earthwise is very similar to the Snow Joe. It has dimensions of 41 x 16 x 38 inches, making it a slight bit more compact. It does weigh a bit more, though, clocking in at 19 pounds. As usual, it runs off of a single iON battery that’s included in the box.

Features

The shovel itself is capable of a clearing width that’s 16 inches wide and up to eight inches deep, making it usable in all but the most severe of conditions. It has the standard 2 blade paddle auger, but the performance from it is better than most amp electric snow shovels out there. It actually throws snow 32 feet away, which is about 50% higher than the Snow Joe. It’s the most powerful electric shovel we’ve seen so far.

As well as that, the Earthwise is capable of shoveling 300 pounds of snow a minute, making it great for heavier snow and light snow. These lbs of snow per minute output are seriously impressive when compared with other amps electric snow shovel models out there.

One particular feature we have to point out is the fact that it has an ergonomic adjustable handle design. This is something that most people aren’t even going to notice, but it makes a massive difference during prolonged usage.

Lastly, the snow thrower chute actually rotates 180 degrees. This is a tiny but massively impactful quality of life feature for when you’re doing heavy-duty work and clearing a lot of snow.

Usage

This particular electric snow shovel has one fatal flaw. It has wheels instead of a rounded bottom. Now, this isn’t a problem in a lot of scenarios. The wheels are well designed and can work in the snow. However, it does make using the shovel noticeably less easy to use. It would make a massive difference for someone from an older generation when compared to a shovel without wheels.

Aside from that, though, the Earthwise is a perfectly functional electric snow shovel. It operates the same as any other, and that’s a good thing. It’s easy to get set up; it’s just a shame that it utilizes wheels instead of an alternative.

FAQ

As always, we’re going to run through some quick questions that people have in regards to the Earthwise.

Can I Use This if There’s Ice and Gravel Mixed in the Snow?

You can, but you really should try to avoid it. The Earthwise was built as a cordless snow shovel and does not play well with other materials. If your snow has other materials mixed in then you might want to consider an electric snow blower.

Can I Change the Snow Throwing Distance?

While you can change the direction of the snow throwing chute, you can’t change the distance. The only thing that has an impact on how far the now goes is if it’s heavy snow or light snow. Heavy snow with a higher water content reaches about 10 feet away, while lighter snow can clear the entire 30+.

Greenworks 12-Inch 40-Volt Cordless Snow Shovel

The Greenworks snow shovel* is the last of the best electric snow shovels on the list, but is it the least? It comes in at the same price as the Earthwise, so that should give you an idea of what to expect.

Specs and Details

The Greenworks electric snow shovel is vague when it comes to highlighting its features, but the important information is still there. It runs off of a 10 amp motor using a standard 40-volt lithium battery. It doesn’t tell us anything about pounds of snow per minute or of how far it can go through snow. It’s hard to compare this electrical snow shovel to a snow blower, let alone another shovel.

Aside from the amp motor, we do now that this snow thrower clears 12 inches wide and around 6 inches deep. That’s all we get in that regard, though. It’s hard to call this the best electric snow shovel when we know nothing about it.

Dimension wise, this snow thrower clocks in a 63.4 x 14.2 x 10.2 and weighs 15 pounds.

Features

Unfortunately, there really isn’t much to write home about here. This battery-powered snow thrower operates like every other electric snow shovel on the market without any of the additional benefits. It’s extremely basic, which is a shame given its high price point.

Usage

Using the Greenworks is the same as using any non-corded snow shovel. You charge up your battery, press the electric snow thrower button, and off you go. There’s nothing else to say in this regard; it operates incredibly simply.

FAQs

If you’re still interested in this 10 amp electric snow shovel, then here are some FAQs.

Is This Snow Shovel Brushless?

Yes, this snow shovel is brushless.

Is it Difficult to Push?

That all depends on your age, ability, and the thickness of the snow. Generally, no, but that can change easily.

Conclusion

Hopefully, you’ve found these electric snow shovel reviews helpful. There are countless electric snow thrower models out there, so don’t be pressured to use one of our picks. We’ve chosen what we think are the best electric snow shovels, but that’s subjective. P.S. Don’t forget your electric hand warmers when heading outdoors 🙂

You could even get a snow blower if you didn’t want a non-corded snow shovel.
