Action camera fans have a new option available to them in the form of Xiaomi’s YI 4K Action Camera 2, the follow-up to last year’s budget action camera, Yi. At $249.99, the YI 2 costs a fair deal less than popular GoPro cameras, but the manufacturer has still packaged some impressive features into the small camera.
Xiami has made a number of improvements with this improved action camera. For starters, the YI 2 has the very same Ambarella A9 chipset, which can be found in the GoPro Hero4. The 2.9-inch display with a 330 PPI is also similar to the screen on some models made by GoPro, and it’s bigger than the screen on the original YI camera. However, it’s still smaller than many GoPro options.
The camera is capable of recording video in 4k, an upgrade from the 1080p of the original Yi, which you can stream to your device via the YI app. New functions include recording slow-motion and time-lapse video.
The manufacturer has also increased battery power thanks to a dual 1,400 mAH battery, which should enable users to get more recording and streaming time out of a single charge — up to 110 minutes of 4k footage at 30 FPS according to the company! Battery time was one of the big complaints with the original Yi.
It’s the frame rates that are the bigger concern to consumers comparing GoPro devices to the YI 4K Action Camera 2. Users can record 60 frames per second at 1440p, 120 frames per second at 1080p and 960p and 240 frames per second at 720p and WVGA.
Another criticism was laggy streaming to the app and a lack of stabilization. Unfortunately, the latter might still be a problem with the Yi 2. If you were a fan of the bright green case the original Yi came in, you might be disappointed to learn that only black and white are options now.
A waterproof case will be available for the camera; although, it’s not certain whether the device will ship with the case.
The features and lower price tag than the GoPro have action photographers and videographers excited for the YI 2. American consumers will be fortunate enough to buy the YI 4K Action Camera 2. The company has previously focused on Asian consumers, especially those in China, but has branched out for the release of its newest action camera.
