Review: Fitbit Flex Wireless Activity + Sleep Wristband

We’ve been wearing and testing FitBit devices for some time now, so we’re never surprised when the company creates a great product. The FitBit Flex Wireless Activity + Sleep Wristband, however, took some of us aback with its useful features and low price.

If you’re looking for an entry-level activity and sleep tracker, you probably won’t find a better deal than this.

Top Features

The FitBit Flex Wireless Activity + Sleep Wristband does just about everything you could want from this type of wearable device. Most importantly, it can track:

  • The number of steps that you take during the day
  • How much distance you travel when you’re running, biking, etc.
  • Keep track of how many calories you burn
  • Track the number of minutes during the day that you are active

The sleep tracking features are also quite nice since it does a lot more than just tell you how long you slept the previous night. When you connect it to your computer or smartphone, you can analyze a variety of data points to determine the quality of your sleep.

We also like that the Flex comes with a silent alarm. If you’re looking to improve your sleep schedule, it’s the perfect way to get on track without disturbing your partner. Instead of an alarm, you just get a vibration that gently wakes you.

What’s Unique About the FitBit Flex?

From what we’ve seen, the FitBit Flex is one of the most water-resistant wearable devices available on the market. Now, this doesn’t mean that you can take it for a swim. If that’s the level of performance that you need, then you will need to spend a lot more money on a waterproof design. Few of those exist and none of them are what we would consider affordable.

The Flex is great because you don’t have to worry about it. Don’t bother taking it off when you get in the shower. It will do just fine with brief exposure to water.

This is especially useful when you first start wearing a fitness tracker. During those first few weeks, it’s easy to forget that to put your device on. Even taking it off to get in the shower is enough to make you forget about it. With the Flex, you don’t have to take it off. That means you get to wear the device throughout the day.

You will, obviously, have to take it off occasionally to charge it. Still, it’s much more convenient than most of the wearable fitness trackers that you will find on the market.

We’re also impressed by the FitBit Flex Wireless Activity + Sleep Wristband’s battery life. We have seen people wear it for up to five days without losing a charge. We’re unaware of any devices that can match this battery life while providing such a long list of features.

FitBit Flex Price

The FitBit Flex retails for about $100. We, however, have been able to find it on sale for closer to $80. It’s the absolute cheapest wearable made by FitBit, but it’s one of them. That makes it a great option for casual exercisers who want to start using data to improve their health.

Potential Drawbacks

FitBit is able to make the Flex so affordable because they do not include a watch face or touchscreen. This isn’t going to matter to the average person. As long as you can connect with your computer or smartphone every once and a while, you can still keep track of your daily fitness and sleep habits. Realistically, most people don’t need to see how far they have walked at this exact point in the day. They don’t mind waiting until later to access the data.

It will become a problem, however, for serious exercisers. If you’re training to run a marathon in a specific amount of time, for instance, this wristband is not the right option for you. You’ll need a design with an easily readable face so you can see your performance from minute to minute (or even second to second).

As long as you just want to use your fitness and sleep tracker casually, you won’t have any problems with the FitBit Flex. It’s a great little device that was designed to work well without costing much money.

Conclusion

The FitBit Flex isn’t perfect for everyone, but it is extremely useful for the average person. By keeping the Flex’s price low, FitBit has made it easier for all people to make healthy decisions. It’s a great aide for anyone trying to improve their health.
