Review: Fitbit Alta

FitBit makes some of the industry’s best wearable devices, so we weren’t surprised to see how well the Alta works. The company has done an extremely good job developing a low-cost fitness and sleep tracker that works nearly as well as devices that cost twice as much.

Top Features

The Alta is one of FitBit’s most advanced fitness and sleep trackers we’ve had the pleasure to test, at least within its price range. It comes with a lot of terrific features that you would typically only expect to find in more expensive devices. This includes its ability to track everything from steps to sleep quality.

The FitBit Alta also has some smartwatch features that make it a great buy, even for people who aren’t hardcore athletes. As long as you have your smartphone nearby, it will tell you when you get a call, text, or calendar notification. That’s helpful in all kinds of circumstances, such as when you’re in a meeting and don’t want to pull our your smartphone to check a message, or when you’re driving and you can’t look away from the road to grab your phone.

The Alta is also extremely attractive, which makes it good for people who want to wear fitness trackers to work. You can even swap out the plastic band with options made of leather and metal.

What’s Unique About the FitBit Alta Fitness Tracker

There are a lot of positive things to say about the FitBit Alta Fitness Tracker. One of the benefits that really stands out to us, though, is the full OLED touchscreen. It’s very difficult to find touchscreen activity trackers at this price. Those that sell for less than $200 often don’t have great resolution and response. That isn’t the case with this device from FitBit, though. It works just as well as activity trackers that cost twice as much.

We are also enamored with the FitBit Alta’s ability to determine what activity you are performing. You don’t have to tell it whether you’re going for a job or taking a bike ride around the park. It automatically knows what you’re doing and makes all of the necessary adjustments to give you accurate data and feedback that will help you reach your fitness goals. We suspect that the Alta does this by simply paying attention to how fast you’re moving. It’s a simple trick, but it works very well.

It’s an especially big advantage for people who enjoy multiple activities. If, for instance, you’re training for a triathlon, you won’t have to stop to tell your activity tracker that you’re getting on a bike. It will just know. You still have to do the hard part (exercising!), but it’s nice to know that the FitBit gives all the support it can.

FitBit Alta Price

We usually see the FitBit Alta Fitness Tracker for sale at about $130. You can occasionally find it for less, but FitBit has worked hard to position this as one of the most affordable options for people who want to track activities throughout the day. Since it’s uniquely designed for people looking for a low-cost option, it’s unlikely that you’ll find it for much lower than $130.

You can, however, lower the overall price by buying it from a company that offers free shipping and handling. Even if it only saves you a few dollars, that’s better than paying full price plus shipping.

Potential Drawbacks

The FitBit Alta does not come with a heart rate monitor. That won’t matter to most people, but it’s a problem for serious athletes who need to track every piece of data about their performance.

Lacking a heart rate monitor could also affect how accurately the FitBit Alta counts the number of calories that you burn. If it can’t measure your heart rate, then it has to make some guesses about how hard you are actually working. In our comparisons, we find that it manages to count calories pretty well, but it’s not quite as accurate as similar devices that have heart rate monitors. Of course, those devices usually cost quite a bit more, so it makes sense that FitBit created this unique version.

Conclusion

Unless you’re a hardcore athlete who needs heart rate monitoring, this is one of the best fitness trackers you can buy. Its aesthetically pleasing design makes it an attractive accessory. Its low price makes it affordable. And its variety of features makes it very useful.a

If you’re looking to improve your health, this is a great place to start.
